How to play Ride the Bus — rules, strategy & FAQ

What is Ride the Bus?

Ride the Bus is a card-guessing drinking game. To get off the bus you have to call four cards in a row correctly; miss any guess and you drink, then the bus starts over from the first card. This version deals from a shuffled 52-card deck and tracks every stage for you, so no cards are needed.

Some groups play a pyramid round first to decide who has to ride the bus. This version skips straight to the bus itself.

What you need

  • This page open on a phone or laptop
  • One or more players — pass the phone around
  • Something to sip; any drink works

The four stages

  1. Red or Black: guess the color of the first card.
  2. Higher or Lower: will the second card be higher or lower than the first? Aces are low, and a tie is safe.
  3. Inside or Outside: will the third card land between your first two cards or outside them? Matching either of those cards is safe.
  4. Pick the Suit: name the suit of the fourth card — spades, clubs, hearts or diamonds.

How the drinking works

Miss a stage and you drink that many sips — one for stage one, up to four for stage four — then the bus restarts at stage one. Clear all four stages and you're off the bus: hand out four sips to anyone you like.

Strategy tips

  • Stage one is a coin flip, but stage two isn't: on a 2 or 3, call higher; on a queen or king, call lower.
  • For inside or outside, look at the gap. A wide gap like 3 and queen favors inside; a narrow one like 7 and 8 means call outside.
  • The suit is always a one-in-four guess, which is why the bus is so hard to get off.

Playing without alcohol

Swap sips for points: a missed stage costs points equal to its number, and the lowest score after a few rides wins. It works as a sober card game for game nights or road trips — passengers only.

FAQ

Why is it called Ride the Bus? Once you're on the bus you keep riding — restarting from the first card — until you get four right in a row.

Are aces high or low? Low. An ace counts as 1.

What's the hardest stage? Picking the suit — you have a one-in-four chance.
